Health Care

Congress is in the midst of developing plans for health care reform. Should and will Congress set aside their bi-partisan differences to reach an agreement on a health care reform plan that will correct the inefficiencies of the current scheme? Discuss below.

Comments: (Dear Senator Continued) It is quite shameful that the insurance companies are allowed to operate as for profit businesses that can make money off of the lives of people. What happened to the traditional notions of insurance? The whole point of insurance was a way to spread costs with people contributing to the pool

Comments: (Dear Senator Continued) and when a member encountered a major catastrophe he/she would not have to bear the huge amount on his own but could draw from the pool. This is no longer the case in America, now we pay our premiums but as soon as we need our insurance they bail on us by dropping us because we become too much of a risk.

Comments: (Dear Senator Continued) We cannot stay true to those fundamental American values if we allow the insurance industries to go unregulated because every day they are denying Americans life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness when they execute "their" power to deny an American citizen the "privilege" to receive medical care.

Comments: (Dear Senator continued) I say "privilege" because by the way that our system works, access to healthcare is not a "right" but is a privilege.

Comments: (Dear Senator Continued) Needless to say, our healthcare system is one that fouled with corporate greed, corruption, and an immoral disregard for the value of human life.

Comments: (Dear Senator Continued) I beg you to remember the values this country was founded upon, and I urge you to remind your fellow colleagues that if we continue to allow the insurance industry to operate as it does, we are essentially sending the message that corporate greed and profit takes priority over human life.

Comments: This whole government health care take over is a bunch of nonsense. We do not need the government telling us when we can go to the Dr. and where we can go to get treatments. What we need is the government to control the insurance companies. They are a bunch of thieves. They rob us with high rates and don’t want to cover anything. The Drs. and the Hospitals inflate the fees in order to get paid what the Insurance companies will pay. Thus if you do not have insurance you still pay the inflated prices. I retired this year at the age of 62 because of health reasons. I had to sign up for SS disability thinking that I would be able to receive Medicare benefits being disabled. HA! HA! The joke on me. Medicare a government run insurance program said no way you have to be disabled for 2 years and then you will have to have some sort of supplemental insurance because we will not cover everything. Sounds like the private insurance companies to me. The government is no better. The cost of medical treatment and medication is just so expensive that it is out of reach of most Americans. We suffer emotionally and physically and cannot receive any help because of the almighty dollar. All Americans should refuse to pay any insurance company anything and just put them completely out of business. We should form a united coalition where every one puts in a reasonable amount each month into fund that pays for health care. A fund not run by government but by the people. Then the Drs., Labs, Hospitals, Dentists, and all other areas of Medicine will have a fixed reasonable fee where we are not charged for toothpicks, needle, tissues, sponge, aspirin, bla, bla, bla, nickel and dime us to death. It is ridiculous to go to a dentist and have to pay $2300 for a root canal and a crown. If this sounds like I am bitter you are right I am. I have worked all my life and paid my taxes, etc. etc. and now I can not get any help at all. The only thing I get is lots of pain and I get to support the over the counter drug companies that make pain medicine. So to hell with the drug companies, the insurance companies, and the government. That my two cents worth. Wake up people we are on our own.

Comments: Berlin, I think the label socialism is most likely a result of propaganda from those against a government role in the plan. To answer your other ?, I think people are so afraid partly b/c of the propaganda - "Oh no, any Government control of the industry will lead to socialism! etc. etc." Catch my drift?

Comments: First of all, can we please drop the label socialism? Who came up with this litmus test that if you're in favor of a government run or significantly impacted medical plan, that you're a socialist? Having said this, I'm far from being an expert on medical care however why are so many people angry over attempts to make it affordable for more?

Comments: Not sure I understand clearly all issues on the table. I do know that since I joined the mass of unemployed, that cost and quality of health insurance is one of my biggest concerns. BUT..with government controled healthcare this nightmare may be part of everyone's dreams look at the effect its had on Canada & England.

Comments: Maybe a universal plan isn't such a bad idea. I never really considered myself to be a socialist but capitalism isn't perfect either...look at where it got the U.S. I understand why conservatives want to keep the health insurance industry privatized but do we really wanna live in a society where businesses capitalize off people's lives?

Comments: I never can get a clear idea about our government's health care reform. I'm sure a lot American people feel the same way, we are confused! But I can tell you what I want: I want to be like my sister who can deliver her baby in the hospital without having insurance, by the way, she lives in Australia. Call me Socialism if you will, I don't care!

Comments: It is surprising and utterly frustrating for me to see and experience the inefficiencies of our health care system. It seems that the people that need insurance the most cannot obtain it or keep it, and it seems that the minute a person gets sick their insurance company wants to up the rates or drop them. If this is the case, then why am I paying for insurance? Insurance companies need to be regulated and Congress needs to put an end to the corruption in the industry. If Congress could support the use of force in Iraq, why can't Congress support a Bill that can help provide relief to millions of Americans who are experiencing the inefficiencies of a health care system that has been overtaken by corporate greed and a lack of decency for the human life?
